This Policy has been reviewed in May 2014 and will be fully implemented in September 2014. This Policy has been drawn up through a collaborative process involving Parental Survey, Parents Association, School Staff and Board of Management.
Rationale
It is important that our children learn to present themselves appropriately. A neat and tidy school uniform helps children to understand the importance of presentation and helps them develop high self-esteem and confidence.
The highest standard of personal appearance is expected at all times as it represents the standards set by our school for our pupils. Accordingly parents must ensure that children comply with these standards in matters of general appearance, dress, hairstyles and jewellery at all times during the school term.
Aim and Objectives
Our policy for our school uniform is based on the ideal that the school uniform
- Promotes a sense of pride in our school.
- Engenders a sense of community and belonging to our school.
- Ensures children feel equal to their peers in terms of appearance.
- Is practical and smart.
- Is designed with health and safety in mind.

School Uniform
On consultation with parents, it is accepted that as children are active on the school yard during breaks, the school tracksuit is more comfortable and practical. Therefore, children have the option of wearing the tracksuit on more than one day (i.e. P.E. day) provided they present neatly and well groomed. Formal uniform is still encouraged for each day and worn for occasions i.e. Masses, Funerals, School Photograph and confirmation.
This option will be reviewed annually.
School Uniform in Relation to P.E.
- School Tracksuit must be worn for P.E.
- Runners (or football boots if going to pitch) must be worn on P.E. day.
- No jewellery on P.E. day
- Shoe laces must be properly tied and not tucked into the sides of shoes.
- Helmets must be worn when playing hurling/hockey.
- Tracksuit pants must fit properly to assist with child’s safety on yard. Children will be unable to participate in a P.E. Lesson if wearing unsuitable footwear or inappropriate t-shirts.
Footwear
For health and safety reasons in the school building and on school yard, children are to wear sensible footwear with support (i.e. laces, straps, no platform shoes or high heels) Laces must be tied at all times
Jewellery
Children may wear watches and one set of stud earrings to school. It is advisable that children leave all other items of jewellery at home. The school cannot be held responsible for any items that are lost.
Appearance
Children are expected to have a neat, well groomed appearance with only items of uniform visible.
Uniform/Tracksuit should be neat and clean at all times. Any tears/ravelling of jumpers/tracksuit pants should be mended as soon as possible. Hair must be neat and tidy. Long hair is tied back from face or hair band worn.
- Coloured hair and make-up is not acceptable.
Parents are advised to have back up items of school uniform to avoid uniform being “dirty”, “in wash”, or “lost”.
Role of Parents
We ask All parents who send their children to our school to support the school uniform policy. It is the responsibility of parents to ensure that their child has the correct uniform and that it is clean and in good repair. All items are to be clearly labelled with the child’s name. The Board of Management does not accept responsibility for loss of property.
The Schools Response to Non Wearing of Uniform
- If a child presents for school without full uniform a note from parent/guardian to class teacher is required.
- If a child presents at school without full uniform or note from parent a “reminder note” is placed in the diary.
- Continuous non-wearing of uniform results in detention at break.
- Children who wear uniform faithfully are allowed have a non-uniform day on day of Christmas holidays and summer holidays. In exceptional circumstances i.e. exceptional hot weather in June children will be allowed wear sensible shorts. If the school is hosting a non-uniform day for charity or fund-raising, the general parent’s body will be informed in advance by note or text.
