Physical Education

Physical Education
Physical Education is a cornerstone of children’s development and aligns closely
with the goals of the Active School Initiative, which promotes daily physical activity
and a whole-school approach to movement and wellbeing. PE lessons play a key
role in helping children achieve this target by providing structured, inclusive, and
enjoyable opportunities to move. We as a staff have developed a 2 year PE plan to
ensure that all areas of the PE curriculum receive equal attention.

Scoil Mhuire is trying to encourage and utilise all physical activity opportunities throughout the school day to get our staff and students moving more.

  • We are promoting playground leaders in the school yard that encourage everyone to get involved at break-times and play different games.
  • We have taking on different initiatives to promote physical activity including the Croke Park Movement Breaks, Skipping around Ireland and regular dance breaks.
  • We have introduced a whole school movement break each day.
  • We are currently encouraging children to participate in Active Homework.
  • The active school committee established an active walkway which promotes orienteering skills.
  • We have a variety of equipment available to all students for break times which is managed by the senior members of the Active Committee themselves.

Active Walkway:

Active walkways are a simple and effective way to support the Active School Initiative by encouraging children to stay active throughout the school day. This signposted path promotes movement such as walking, jogging, skipping, or completing fun challenges. They help children achieve the recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity while also being inclusive and accessible to all ages and abilities. There are a range of learning opportunities that arise from this activity including identifying flags, developing mathematical skills and working as a team.

PAWS:

Water safety is an essential life skill that helps protect children and gives them the confidence to enjoy water activities safely. Whether at the pool, beach, or even at home, teaching children about water safety can prevent accidents and save lives. Each class in the school participated in PAWS water safety lessons to make children aware of the dangers around water. The children really enjoyed participating in this and receiving a certificate of completion.
