Physical Activity

Active schools flag
Since September, the active schools committee has worked very hard in ensuring we
become a fit and healthy school. They have organised events, challenges, and activities over
the past few months for the whole school. Their efforts have been rewarded as they helped
our school obtain an active schools flag. We officially raised our flag on June 12 th with the
help of local GAA representatives Séamus Stritch, Sheila Thompson, and Seán O’Gorman.
Thank you to everyone for their hard work and support in making our school a healthy and
happy place.

‘Research studies show that physical activity during the school day has the greatest impact on students with low physical activity levels’. Active School’s Campaign.

Scoil Mhuire is trying to encourage and utilise all physical activity opportunities throughout the school day day to get staff and our students moving more.

  • We are promoting playground leaders in the school yard that encourage everyone to get involved at break-times and play different games.
  • We have taking on different initiatives to promote physical activity including the ‘Reaching for Heights’ skipping challenge and the ‘Step into Spring’ challenge of walking 20km.
  • We have active break challenges where the children engage in dancing and movement in between subjects.
  • We are currently encouraging children to participate in Active Homework.
  •  The active school committee established an active walkway.
  • Active schools survey
As part of our active school research, the fifth and sixth class active school members
conducted the “What club are you in?” survey from 1 st to 6 th Class. Through this survey we
gained insight into the activity levels of our pupils outside of school. We also encouraged
parents to get involved in this survey to see just how active we can all be.
Of 63 children surveyed, 92% of the children are involved in an active club outside of school.
It also showed that these levels of activity were spread across 11 different clubs including
    GAA, rugby, swimming, and golf.

Walkway launch

On Thursday March 16th, the active school committee officially launched their active walkway. The purpose of the walkway is to get children moving in a fun and educational way. The walkway can be used in a variety of ways including orienteering, meetings on the move, step challenges, and the practice of fundamental movement skills. On March 31st the children will have the opportunity to use the walkway as part of our official “Walkway Day”. The children are looking forward to all the activities to come!
